The Hidden Link We Ignored for Decades

Not long ago, mental health was not associated with brain or cardiac health. Shocking… but true. For decades, mental health was viewed through psychological and social factors. Biological factors did not apply.
That was then. Today, depression and anxiety are recognized as biological forces that reshape your health. They impact the brain, the heart, and the vascular system, and are regarded as notable risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
According to research, untreated or poorly managed depression and anxiety are linked to a 32 percent higher risk of heart attack or stroke (1)
A study, published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, found that stress, autonomic nervous system dysregulation, and chronic inflammation bridge emotional distress to vascular disease.
When you have unmitigated stress, and the brain’s stress circuits are stimulated for long, the body’s “fight or flight” mechanism becomes activated. The chain reaction does not stop there. The activated “fight or flight” mechanism releases cortisol, which then increases heart rate, blood pressure, and inflammation.
With the passage of time, these changes damage blood vessels and accelerate the risk of stroke and heart disease.
In mental health situations (in which treatment is poor or simply does not exist), this loop is triggered a lot, and the brain and heart are ultimately affected.
Key Takeaway
Your mental health is not divorced from your physical health. Your brain and heart listen to your mind more than you think. And when the mind suffers, the brain and heart pay the price. They are connected for life.
Untreated or poorly treated depression and anxiety increase cardiovascular risk through stress‑circuit overactivation, inflammation, and autonomic dysregulation.
Protect your brain and heart. Get treated if you have depression or anxiety.
Break the loop.
